Vehicle type is still important. Certain categories may have additional requirements. For example, the BVI Government requires an approval process for the importation of certain trucks and trailers.

Ordinary passenger motor vehicles generally fall within Chapter 87 of the BVI customs tariff and are commonly subject to a 20% customs duty. The exact duty depends on the vehicle's customs classification and any applicable exemption or concession.
The BVI introduced temporary customs-relief measures during 2026, including a temporary change in the valuation basis. Those measures were stated to apply from 1 May through 31 July 2026.
Because customs policies and concessions can change, customers should confirm the current duty rate and customs valuation with His Majesty's Customs or a licensed BVI clearing agent before importing the vehicle.
Port handling, wharfage, storage, registration, licensing, insurance and clearing-agent charges may also apply.
Port Purcell on Tortola is the British Virgin Islands' principal cargo port and handles containerized and break-bulk cargo.

A vehicle imported into the British Virgin Islands must be registered with the Department of Motor Vehicles. Current regulations generally require the owner of an imported vehicle to register it within 15 days of importation, except vehicles imported by a dealer for sale.
After registration, the vehicle must go through the local licensing process. The Department of Motor Vehicles requires the vehicle and valid insurance to be presented for inspection.
After the vehicle passes inspection, the applicable licensing fee is paid and the licensing sticker is issued.
Current government guidance also states a one-time vehicle registration fee of US$10 and US$25 where new licence plates are required. Licensing fees vary according to vehicle weight and other applicable categories.
