For vehicles arriving in the Cayman Islands after December 31, 2025, vehicles with a model year of 2018 or earlier are generally prohibited from importation. For normal passenger vehicle purchases in 2026, customers should therefore select a 2019 model year or newer vehicle.

Certain exemptions apply, including some heavy-goods vehicles, delivery vans, motorcycles and scooters, special-purpose vehicles, qualifying returning Caymanians and certain other categories. Customers considering an older or specialised vehicle should confirm eligibility with Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control before purchase.

Cayman Islands customs duty depends on the vehicle's tariff classification, CIF value, powertrain and intended use. Conventional passenger vehicles commonly fall within duty rates ranging from approximately 29.5% to 42%, while hybrid, electric and other vehicle categories may have different rates.

An environmental tax also applies to many imported motor vehicles. Under the current tariff, the environmental tax is generally CI$1,000 for applicable vehicles with a CIF value of CI$79,999 or less and CI$2,000 for applicable vehicles valued at CI$80,000 or more.

Port and cargo charges may also apply. The final amount payable should always be confirmed with Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control and the local port or clearing agent before import.

1. Standard vehicles imported during 2026 should generally be model year 2019 or newer unless they qualify for an exemption.
2. Vehicles designed to carry more than nine passengers, excluding the driver, require prior authorisation from the Governor or Public Transportation Board and must comply with passenger-door requirements.
3. Written approval from the Director of Licensing is required for certain vehicles including double-decker omnibuses, beach buggies, dune buggies and similar vehicles.
4. Caravans and certain oversized vehicles, including Hummer automobiles wider than 6.8 feet, are prohibited from import.
5. After arrival, the vehicle must be insured and pass a Cayman Islands vehicle inspection to obtain a Certificate of Roadworthiness before it can be registered and licensed.
6. Import rules can change. Vehicle eligibility should be confirmed before purchasing or shipping a vehicle from Japan.

Customs & Border Control may request documents relating to the vehicle purchase and shipment. Customers should keep the following documents available where applicable:

• Bill of Lading
• Commercial or final invoice
• Pro forma invoice where applicable
• Japanese Export Certificate or vehicle title documentation
• Proof of payment
• Customs import documentation
• Valid insurance for local registration
• Any additional documents requested by Cayman Islands authorities
