Japanese Used Cars for Guyana – Import Rules, ATJ Inspection & Shipping

Guyana previously restricted the importation of motor vehicles eight years old and over. That restriction was removed effective 1 October 2020.

Vehicles more than eight years old may therefore be imported, subject to the applicable inspection, customs, registration and other requirements. Customers should still consider vehicle age carefully because age and engine capacity can significantly affect the taxes payable in Guyana.

Effective 1 February 2025, the Guyana Revenue Authority requires a Vehicle Inspection Certificate for used motor vehicles imported into Guyana. Brand-new vehicles are excluded from this requirement.

The Guyana Revenue Authority currently lists AutoTerminal Japan Ltd. (ATJ) as the authorized inspection agency in Japan for issuing the required Vehicle Inspection Certificate.

The inspection certificate must be submitted with the relevant documents in Guyana's ASYCUDA customs system. Failure to provide the required certificate may prevent the customs declaration from being processed or delay release of the vehicle.

Motor vehicle taxes in Guyana depend on factors including vehicle age, engine capacity, fuel type, vehicle classification and CIF value.

Under the current Guyana Revenue Authority motor-vehicle tax guide, vehicles four years old and over are generally subject to flat-rate or formula-based excise taxation.

• Gasoline vehicles four years old and over, up to 1500cc: 0% Customs Duty, G$800,000 flat Excise Tax and 0% VAT.
• Diesel and semi-diesel vehicles four years old and over, up to 1500cc: 0% Customs Duty, G$800,000 flat Excise Tax and 0% VAT.
• Vehicles with larger engines are subject to different excise-tax formulas based on engine capacity and CIF value.
• Vehicles less than four years old are subject to different duty and excise-tax rates depending on engine capacity, fuel type and vehicle classification.

Guyana also introduced additional motor-vehicle tax measures effective 16 February 2026, including changes affecting certain newer vehicles, hybrid vehicles and double-cab pickups.

Because vehicle tax calculations can vary substantially, customers should confirm the final amount using the current Guyana Revenue Authority motor-vehicle calculator or through a licensed Guyana Customhouse broker before purchasing.

• Valid identification for local registration
• Tax exemption or approval documents where applicable
