Japanese Used Cars for Saint Lucia – Import Rules & Shipping

Saint Lucia restricts the importation of used motor vehicles according to the vehicle's gross weight and age.

• Used vehicles not exceeding 2 tonnes gross weight generally cannot be more than 5 years old.
• Used vehicles exceeding 2 tonnes but not exceeding 3 tonnes generally cannot be more than 8 years old.
• Used vehicles exceeding 3 tonnes generally cannot be more than 10 years old.

Certain exceptions may apply with the appropriate government approval or for qualifying persons taking up permanent residence. Customers considering a vehicle close to the age limit should confirm eligibility before bidding or purchase.

Taxes on imported vehicles in Saint Lucia can include customs duty, customs service charge, excise tax and Value Added Tax (VAT). The exact amount depends on the vehicle's customs classification, engine capacity, age, fuel or powertrain type and customs value.

Saint Lucia's standard VAT rate is currently 12.5%. Important for hybrid vehicles: Saint Lucia Customs has clarified that mild-hybrid vehicles do not automatically qualify for reduced hybrid import-duty and excise-tax concessions. Eligibility for a hybrid or sustainably fuelled vehicle concession requires the appropriate government approval.

Saint Lucia has cargo facilities at both Port Castries and Port Vieux Fort. Port Castries handles cargo for the local market and has RoRo-capable berthing facilities, while Port Vieux Fort also provides container and cargo-handling facilities.

2026 Customs update: Saint Lucia Customs has implemented the Customs Vehicle Release Verification System (CVRS).
